Exercise Physiology in the New Support at Home Program
Australia’s aged-care system has recently experienced one of its biggest reforms, with the Support at Home (SAH) Program officially replacing the former Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025. The aim of the new program is clear: to make it easier for older Australians to access the right services so they can continue living independently in their own homes.
If you are currently seeing an Exercise Physiologist, this is good news!
What is the new Support At Home program?
The Support at Home Program has been designed to be more flexible, transparent and responsive than the previous Home Care Package system. Instead of the previous four-level model, the new structure uses eight funding levels, allowing services to be better matched to individual needs. Budgets are allocated quarterly and can roll over within set limits, giving individuals more choice and control over the support they receive.
The Support At Home program groups services into three main areas: clinical support, independence support and everyday living support. This means that more older Australians can now access additional health-focused services, including Exercise Physiology.
How Exercise Physiology Fits Into the Support at Home Program
Under the Support At Home program, older adults can access Exercise Physiology services to help maintain mobility, manage chronic health conditions and recover from illness, injury or surgery. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) play a crucial role in supporting healthy ageing by designing tailored exercise programs that can:
- Improve strength, balance and coordination
- Reduce the risk of falls
- Support recovery after surgery or hospital stays
- Decrease joint pain and stiffness
- Improve cardiovascular fitness and energy levels
- Support better mood, mental wellbeing and social participation
As part of the program’s focus on functional independence, our team of Exercise Physiologists on the Sunshine Coast provide personalised, functional and goal-oriented programs that can be delivered:
- At home, for those who prefer the comfort and convenience
- In-clinic, for clients who benefit from specialised equipment, group sessions or a more structured setting
This flexible approach ensures that older adults can access rehabilitation, fall prevention exercise and chronic condition management in the way that best suits their lifestyle.
